2018 TV Series - Where MGH Stands on Winter Premieres

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And what’s better than that? Recovering from the holiday season with a batch of new tv series that are set to premiere early in 2018!

To best prepare for your future couch time viewing schedule, we wanted to provide a review of the top five shows to keep an eye out for as we move into the new year. While it’s still yet to be determined if these shows will sink or swim, we’d like to believe us seasoned media experts know a good show when we see one. Since the universe of television has somewhat unlimited options, we’ve limited our review to the top 5 broadcast television networks, selecting one new show from each.

1. 9-1-1

Network: Fox

Starring: Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, and Peter Krause

Premiere date: January 3

The new procedural drama follows different first responders in Los Angeles – including cops, paramedics, firefighters and dispatchers. With a star-studded cast and the successful veteran show runners and co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the show has a lot to live up to… and we are here for it!

2. Black Lightning

Network: CW

Starring: Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, and Nafessa Williams

Premiere date: January 16

This is the latest creation from the DC Comics universe. Jefferson Pierce is a retired superhero – aka Black Lightning – a meta-human with the power to harness electricity. Nine years after hanging up his costume, Jefferson suits back up when his daughters and community are threatened by a new evil. While the show may skew to a younger audience, it’s also a family drama about a man who’s a hero whether he’s suited up or not!

3. Good Girls

Network: NBC

Starring: Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, and Retta

Premiere date: February 26

Three suburban women rob a grocery store for a little extra cash and get a little more than they bargained for. The comedy-drama series is described as a mix of Thelma and Louise and Breaking Bad, and should make for a good fit for all those Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy fans. Not to mention, Good Girls will be taking the post-Voice slot on Monday’s, setting it up for strong lead-in.

4. Instinct

Network: CBS

Starring: Alan Cumming, Naveen Andrews, and Whoopi Goldberg

Premiere date: March 11

A former CIA agent who now works as a professor and author is asked to help the NYPD stop a serial killer on the loose. It's based on James Patterson's popular Murder Games novel. With a strong lead in Alan Cumming, the crime series should present a good mix of drama and effortless wit.

5. American Idol

Network: ABC

Premier Date: March 11

Yes, we know… American Idol, huh? Less than a year after its series finale on FOX, ABC has revived the singing competition! With a new group of judges – Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan – and returning host Ryan Seacrest, the reality race begins for the next American Idol. It premieres after the Oscars, so it is set up to make splash on premiere night!
